The carnation is one of two flowers for January... The inspiration for my painting of a red and pink carnation came from the emotions these flowers represent. Old neon signs intrigue me. The patina of age on the metal. The way the sun reflects in the glass tubing and the shadows they cast. I abstract them by cropping them tightly and shooting them at an angle that might mimic a viewers glance. This sign in downtown Gilbert on the Liberty Market caught my eye on our first visit to Gilbert before we moved here from Oregon. It?s downtown treasure! Watercolor on Arches 140 lb. My two sons both moved to Arizona for work and we missed them so much we immediately began trying to create a path for us to move to the Phoenix area. This painting was an attempt to paint desert themed flora to feel closer to them. We now live in a suburb of Phoenix and love the unique beauty found in the desert!

I had been painting for about 3 months, watching tutorials on uou tube, practicing different techniques. I was feeling confident. I had a blank sheet and some inspirational pictures around me and started to build a picture. Once the flow came it was like a wave, not stopping until I wad happy, finishing it off with the bee in the flower. I love bees. Felt overjoyed at my achievement in this piece.

A Duplex owner decided to run a cafe in the CBD. It became very successful with people gathering all hours of the morning. I had an hour to wait for an appointment in town, so I sketched this on location. DS watercolour on 300gsm cotton.
